Why You’ll Love This Recipe

White rice is one of my favorite pressure cooker recipes for beginners. It’s a staple recipe you’ll be making long after you’re a pressure cooking pro!

When you use your Instant Pot / pressure cooker to cook rice, there’s no waiting for water to boil. No watching to ensure your pot doesn’t overflow. No boiling too hard and burnt rice.

Simply set the white rice in the Instant Pot and come back to perfectly cooked rice every time.

Update: This is the recipe I’ve made more than any other on our site. In fact, I haven’t cooked rice on the stove since I developed this recipe over a decade ago. So we thought we’d give it new photos and answer some additional reader questions.

If you’re a visual learner, you can check out our How to Cook White Rice in an Instant Pot video on YouTube.

In this video, we share our favorite tips for perfect rice every time, including our preferred rice-to-water ratio and how to rinse your rice before cooking.

Ingredients for Instant Pot white rice, including rice, salt, and water.

How to Make White Rice in an Instant Pot

This easy recipe will work in any brand of electric pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi, or Power Pressure Cooker XL.

This recipe works for short-grain and long-grain white rice, as well as basmati and jasmine rice.

This recipe has three ingredients, three steps, and three minutes at high pressure:

  1. First, combine rinsed rice, water, and salt in your pressure cooker pot.
  2. Next, seal the lid with a 3 minute cook time.
  3. Finally, release the pressure naturally for 10 minutes before releasing any remaining pressure and removing the lid. Fluff your perfect rice prior to serving.

Remember: The 3-minute cook time is NOT the total time it will take to cook. It will take a few minutes to reach pressure and another minute or two to release the pressure after cooking. But you can lock the lid in place and leave the room until the timer beeps.

How to Double or Half Instant Pot White Rice

This Instant Pot White Rice recipe is easily doubled or tripled in a 6-quart pressure cooker without any additional pressure cooking time. (If you’re worried about foaming, add 1 tablespoon oil.)

Rice also refrigerates and freezes well, so I often make a big batch of rice and have cooked white rice on hand to pair with future meals any time.

If you want to make a half batch of this recipe, I recommend cooking your rice pot in pot

Troubleshooting Sticky Instant Pot Rice

I’ve been making this rice recipe for almost a decade, and it always turns out well for me.

If your Instant Pot White Rice comes out stickier than you like, here are a few tricks to try:

  • After pressure cooking and removing the lid, lay a clean kitchen cloth over the top of the cooking pot. The cloth will absorb some of the extra moisture that causes stickiness.
  • After you fluff the rice, return the lid of the pressure cooker. Turn off the Keep Warm setting and allow the rice to sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then fluff again.
  • Place it in a fine mesh strainer and run under cold water, then drain well.

And some ideas to remember for the next time you make rice:

  • Before cooking, be sure to rinse the rice thoroughly to remove as much starch as possible.
  • Some brands of rice absorb less liquid than others. Try a longer-grain rice or a different brand for drier rice in the future.
  • Add a little oil or butter before pressure cooking to prevent the grains from sticking together.

Soaking Your Rice

A few years back, I got a comment from a reader about her mother’s method for rising rice. June said that her Japanese mom always says to rinse with super hot water until clear and then let the rice sit in hot water until it turns bright white. I use that technique before cooking in the Instant Pot when I want my rice to be perfect.

Cooking at Altitude?

Barbara and Jenn live around 5,000 feet, and the 3-minute cook time works out well with no adjustments. However, if we’re much above 5,000 feet above sea level, we like to add a minute to the cook time for the rice. If you’re above 7,500, you may need to add another minute or two.

This is the easiest way to make rice! This Instant Pot White Rice recipe is simple and gives you consistent results: fluffy rice that’s on your table in less than 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long grain white rice, rinsed*
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Add the rinsed rice, water, and salt to the pressure cooking pot. Stir to ensure the rice is distributed evenly in the pot and covered by the water.
  2. Lock the lid in place. Select High Pressure and 3 minutes cook time. When the cook time ends, turn off the pressure cooker and allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then finish with a quick pressure release.
  3. Carefully remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork or a rice paddle. Serve immediately or cover until ready to serve.

Notes

*I originally adapted this recipe for the electric pressure cooker from the Veggie Queen's book, The New Fast Food.

*If you're above 5,000 feet, I recommend adding another minute to the cook time for best results.
